Indicaciones de Uso

Used to estimate obligatory daily free‑water loss when quantifying net fluid balance in perioperative or critically ill patients. Indicated when oral intake is impaired, fever or tachypnea increases evaporative loss, or precise fluid balance targets are required (e.g., shock, DI, hypernatremia). Clinically useful to avoid unrecognized fluid deficits or excess, complementing weight and balance charts, which are often inaccurate 1 [Level II evidence].

Información y Precauciones

Increase estimates during fever, tachypnea, low humidity, radiant warming, or ECMO sweep‑gas flow; decrease during high ambient humidity. Insensible losses vary unpredictably and cannot be reliably inferred from fluid balance or weight alone (weak correlation r≈0.27) 1 [Level II evidence]. Critically ill states (sepsis, AKI) further destabilize water balance 2 [Level II evidence]. In DI or impaired thirst, rising insensible losses risk hypernatremia and require close sodium‑based monitoring 3 [Level II evidence].
